Through their involvement and historiography since the end of the conflict, the GI and the American paratrooper are key figures in the operations of June 1944 in Normandy. The former took part in the landings on the beaches of Utah and Omaha, then was an important element in the exploitation of the Allied breakthrough until the Falaise pocket was closed. As a soldier in a resolutely modern army, he presented a vision totally opposed to that of the other belligerents, with very important logistics, extreme rationalisation of his equipment and impedimenta, but also of his way of fighting. As for the American paratrooper, he made history with the action of the 82nd Airborne and 101st Airborne Divisions a few hours before the first GIs set foot on the Normandy beaches. These elite soldiers, with their special equipment, faced a number of challenges linked to the uncertainty surrounding their mission and a variety of parameters that were difficult to predict. These two booklets present in detail the characteristics of these two types of soldiers, from the contents of their kit to the fighting on 6 June 1944.
